Creative Steps at DanceHouse
Happy New Year 2012!
It has been a busy autumn with new members joining Creative Steps and everyone working hard to find their feet and train together. We were delighted that Emma O’Kane, professional dancer with CoisCéim, was free to lead a few technique classes; Emma will be back later in the year to create a new piece with the group. Creative Steps finished the year in style with a lively and informal performance as part of a combined event with The Choreography Project at the DanceHouse. (a BIG thank you to Dance Ireland for supporting the event!). The group presented an excerpt of new piece Frame by Frame, which explores the murky world of online identity theft and the darker side of Facebook.

From January to March the group is working with choreographer Philippa Donnellan to complete Frame by Frame.
Check this page or Creative Steps on Facebook for upcoming performance by the group.

We’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate Dylan Gray on his performance with Broken Talkers Theatre Company in their most recent production The Blue Boy as part of Ulster Bank’s Dublin Theatre Festival.
recent performances
An excerpt of FRAME BY FRAME was seen at the Irish Youth Dance Festival 3 July at The Pavilion Theatre, Dún Laoghaire.
April 2010 Creative Steps performed the dance theatre piece Ya Wha’ as part of NOISEmoves Youth Dance Festival at The Civic Theatre in Tallaght. The festival was established by South Dublin County Council Arts Office in 2010 and hosted by South Dublin Dancer-in-Residence Louise Costello. The event gave the group valuable opportunity to present new choreography as well as see other groups perform.

About Coiscéim Creative Steps
CoisCéim Creative Steps was established in September 2007 for young people aged 15-25 with an interest in dance, theatre and choreography. Throughout the year, dancers have opportunity to work with guest choreographers and artists, as well as choreograph their own work and perform in different festivals and events. Annual membership of CoisCéim Creative Steps is through informal audition which takes place each September. A basic level of technical skill in any form of dance or physical theatre is required; of equal importance are enthusiasm, energy and a commitment to working creatively as part of a group.
If you are interested there are various opportunities throughout the year when you can see Creative Steps in action and meet members of CoisCéim. Click here to join our mailing list and receive updates.

dance film project 2011
Creative Steps have just completed their very own dance film project with Peter Kelly of FilmCircle Productions as film mentor and Philippa Donnellan as dance mentor. Four short dance films, which will be screened later in the year, were created by Sibéal Davitt, Aliina Lindroos, Olwyn Lyons and Maeve Hegarty/Hannah Devoy.
This is the third dance film project by members of Creative Steps. The first project 1 Shot Wonders 2008 produced four highly original short films. The second project in 2009 resulted in a film produced that was created by the group - the imaginative Dressing for Beginners.
The dance film project presented a challenging opportunity for the group. It enabled participants to create and perform choreography within a technology-driven context, collaborate on aspects of film production, as well as extend technical dance and film skills.
Creative Steps first worked with Peter Kelly of FilmCircle Productions on the innovative Strange Encounters collaborative arts weekend hosted by Kildare County Council’s Youth Arts Service. We are delighted that Peter was able to work with us again and to offer his skills and support.
The project resulted in four very different original short dance films. These were screened at Exchange Dublin in October at a specially arranged evening of dance and film.
What happened in 2010
Culture Night - 24 September. Members of Creative Steps performed Dance Arias, an inter-generational dance performance by people aged 15 - 80. The genesis of the piece was a partnership project with CoisCéim Broadreach and Dublin City Council Arts, Sport & Leisure, and Community Development Sections. Dance Arias was performed at The Mansion House, Dublin in May 2010. For Culture Night, Dance Arias was re-developed bringing people from two of our regular groups together for the first time: CLARENDON STREET CLASS for people aged 50+ and members of CREATIVE STEPS – YOUNG PEOPLE’S DANCE THEATRE. See Elders for more information
From 2 June to 4 July Kildare County Council Arts Service in association with CoisCéim Broadreach invited young artists and youth arts groups aged between 18 and 25 to take part in a 3 day arts exploration and performance event at DanceTones Studio, Newbridge, Co. Kildare. Creative Steps performed their new piece entitled Ya wha’.
In April, Creative Steps showcased a new dance theatre piece Part 2. Night of the Living Debs directed by Philippa Donnellan. Based on past and present debutante traditions, Part 2: Night of the Living Debs displays the cosmetic process of transformation; a world of fake tan, hair spray and Barbie blonde highlights .The Showcase was held at NPAS Studio for friends and family. Since then the group has performed the piece at The Axis as part of LiFT Ballymun Youth Arts Festival, and NOISEmoves Dance Festival at The Civic Theatre, Tallaght.
For the third year running members of Creative Steps worked with choreographer Muirne Bloomer and City Fusion Group on St Patrick’s Day parade. An exciting project, this year the dancers collaborated with communities from the Philippinnes, Lithuania and Nigeria amongst others.
In February, Members of CoisCéim Creative Steps performed Part 1: Night of the Living Debs as part of DCU Dance Society's ALL-IRELAND DANCE EXPERIMENT 2010 at The Helix.
Dancer Olwyn Lyons performed in the centrepiece of Dublin Dance Festival 2010 in June. Young People, Old Voices is by the influential German choreographer, Raimund Hoghe. Olwyn also worked as Dance Assistant in CoisCéim's Dance AriasProject.
Dancers Rachel Burke and Aileen Rogers successfully auditioned for Dundee School of Contemporary Dance Middlesex University respictively. They began professional dance training in September 2010.

what happened in 2008 / 2009
The year 2008 /2009 was an exceptionally busy time for CoisCéim Creative Steps. The group worked with choreographer Philippa Donnellan on the re-make of the darkly humorous piece Isadora Door. The piece was presented at Sonraigh Youth Dance Festival at Wexford’s state of the art Opera House, November 2008.
From December to January Scottish choreographer Eddie Kay created Square Peg, which premiered in a special in-house performance in February 2009. It was later performed at Open House at DanceHouse and Irish Youth Dance Festival at Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire.
With no pause for breath, the group launched into St Patrick’s Day Festival with City Fusion group, directed by choreographer Muirne Bloomer. The chosen theme drew from the story, The Conference of the Birds and inspired stunning costumes by Costume Designer Sabine D’Argent. Creative Steps danced exuberantly with dance communities of other nationalities in St Patrick’s Day Parade, and for the second year running City Fusion won the award for ‘Best Pageant’.
In April, David Freyne of Tilted Pictures worked as film mentor on the second dance film project. The resulting original film Dressing for Beginners was directed by Creative Steps dancer Maeve Hegarty with choreography, performance and production by the group.
