Culture Night 2010

In 2010 Temple Bar Cultural Trust commissioned CoisCéim Broadreach to create an intergenerational performance for Culture Night. The genesis of the piece entitled Dance Arias was a partnership project with CoisCéim Broadreach and Dublin City Council Arts, Sport & Leisure, and Community Development Sections. Dance Arias was performed at The Mansion House, Dublin in May 2010. For Culture Night, Dance Arias was re-developed bringing people from two of our regular groups together for the first time: Clarendon StREET class for people aged 50+ and members of Creative Steps – Young People’s Dance Theatre.

Working with choreographer Philippa Donnellan, twenty people aged 18 + created choreography to such arias as Barcarolle by Offenbach, and La Donna é Mobile by Verdi. Dance Arias was performed on Culture Night 2010 at two outdoor locations in Temple Bar, Dublin. The dancers, individually dressed in black outfits, looked fabulously elegant and danced with great flair, poise – and finesse! With the whole of Dublin city centre alive with different cultural events it felt that Dance Arias contributed to the real spirit of Culture Night; it was certainly warmly received by the large audiences present at each performance.

It was a delight to work with everyone. I found it challenging to explore and create movement, to discover what we had in common – and the different styles of dancing. During the rehearsal period it was interesting to see how people’s movement awareness and confidence grew. I was lucky to have a chance to re-work choreographic material, and to work with such a committed, creative and fun-loving group of people – I’m looking forward to the next opportunity as I hope everyone else is.’  Philippa Donnellan, October 2010

I cannot really express how much I enjoyed the classes, from the gentle exercises to the choreography I found it all so enjoyable and satisfying
