CELLO COUNTERPOINT at The Reich Effect Festival

CoisCéim Dance Theatre and Cork Opera House present this short work as part of the Reich Effect Festival 28 July at The Firkin Crane, Cork.

The festival is a 5 day celebration marking the 75th year of pioneering composer Steve Reich.

The opening concert of the festival brings together some of Ireland’s most talented musicians to perform Reich’s four counterpoint pieces: Counterpoint, Vermont Counterpoint, Electric Counterpoint and Cello Counterpoint. Each piece is a work for solo instrument and tape.

In 2001, I travelled across the Atlantic to catch a performance of Drumming by Steve Reich and choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker at Brooklyn Academy of Music. The performance left a long and lasting impression on me. The relationship between his music and the dance created a world on stage that was totally uplifting in its power of deep communication. When I was approached to choreograph Cello Counterpoint for the Reich Effect festival, I was honored and excited to create a work that could build on the layers I had experienced from his compositions.  Steve Reich's music is inspiring, wonderfully visual with emotional and intellectual depth. I am delighted that CoisCéim will be performing with Kate Ellis and being part of this unique festival to celebrate Steve Reich's musical genius.
